One Young World Academy: Pandemic Preparedness 2021

Deadline: 12th September, 2021

Summary: Applications are invited for the One Young World Academy: Pandemic Preparedness 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the global challenge of infectious diseases, and the demand for young leadership on these issues. One Young World Academy: Pandemic Preparedness offers the opportunity to take part in a pioneering online lecture series.

Details: The Academy will bring together 3,000 participants from across the world to deepen their understanding of the critical issues resulting from the pandemic and offer exclusive insights from world-leading experts. In addition to three expert-led lectures, participants will receive access to a curated list of additional resources. These accessible and informative resources include podcasts, documentaries, and articles will be a further opportunity for participants to enhance their understanding of pandemic preparedness, building on the topics covered in the lectures.

The Lectures:

  • Vaccines Domestic & Global Responses (September 14, 2021): The COVID-19 vaccine effort has been exceptional in its speed. As of August 2021, 4.31 billion doses have been administered globally, for a disease discovered less than two years ago. The panel will address the major challenges that vaccine suppliers have faced, vaccine development processes, building and maintaining global supply chains, and the task of vaccine procurement and allocation.
  • Communications: Infectious Disease Stigma (September 21, 2021): The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism found that 59% of fact-checked COVID-19 information was false – a sign of what the WHO dubbed the ‘infodemic’ of misinformation. Gain insight into effective public health communication and how trust can be built in order to combat misinformation campaigns.
  • Zoonosis & Antimicrobial Resistance (September 28, 2021): Join OYW Academy for a lecture on Zoonosis, sanitation and antimicrobial resistance. How do we prevent future pandemics in a world in which the conditions for pandemic outbreaks (globalisation, urbanisation, and climate change) are becoming more prevalent? Lecturers will address the causes of pandemic outbreaks and the factors that undermine our response to them.

Coursework and Certification:

  • Once participants have watched a lecture, they will be given the opportunity to produce a 500-word essay on the lecture topic, drawing on the lectures, provided resources, and their own research.
  • If participants choose to submit, their work will be assessed and graded. Candidates must only submit one essay so should select the lecture they wish to submit their coursework on in advance.
  • The coursework questions will be on the landing page of the Academy platform. Coursework submission will also be rewarded with a certificate of completion, coursework is optional and if participants decide not to submit, they will instead be awarded with a certificate of participation instead.
  • The three most outstanding pieces of work will be recognised for their excellence and will be rewarded with publication on the One Young World website and the winners will be given further exclusive opportunities.

Eligibility:

  • Applications are open to individuals from around the world.
  • Participants should be between the age of 18 and 30 as content is created with this demographic in mind. Participants over the age of 30 are welcome to join the Academy.
